White Trash, that's strange I just read an article about the deserts being one of the larger "sinks" for CO2.  They claim that the arid alkaline soils absorb large quatities of CO2.  Also they say that the Mojave desert absorbs as much C02 as a temperate rain forest.  I believe the initial study was published in Science magazine.

Ryan, I did not say deserts didn't sink C02.  After all, deserts -- if they haven't been raped for human's, are still ecosystems; however, deserts are much hotter and drier than a heavily forested and dense ecosystem.  Deforestation opens the sky, decreases transpiration and decreases cloud coverage, which warms up the immediate and regional climates and produces a drier climate.  Desert ecosystems are drier and hotter than densely forested ecosystems.  After all, we are discussing global warming.  What is warming up the Earth?  Deforestation equates to desertification, which implies a hotter and drier climate!!!  

What is growing or not growing in the soil, determines the immediate and regional climates.  And transpiration.   How much hotter is concrete, bricks, asphalt and stucco than a densely forested ecosystem?  Precisely, why science refers to cities as, "heat islands".  What reflects more heat back into the atmosphere, a shopping mall or a forest?  On a hot day, where would you be cooler, under the wide sweep of an old tree, under the thick, sheltering canopy of a dense, heavily forested ecosystem or standing in the open under an opened sky?  Add slabs of concrete to the scenario and have that heat reflected back into the atmosphere!!

Ecosystems also balance the gaseous composition of the atmosphere.  There was no oxygen on Earth until the advent of green plants and trees.  As ecosystems also govern Earth's biogeochemistry that loops from the seas to the land, and as one environmental attorney remarked, reducing carbon admissions isn't even going to be a band-aid because ecosystems govern all aspects of life, from releasing oxygen and balancing the gaseous composition of the atmosphere to contributing to the carbon and nitrogen cycles, both synonymous with life itself.  Ecosystems regulate the climate as well.   

And, all of ecosystems vital "life-support services" are all interconnected.  And, Ryan, not all scientists are ecologically literate as well.

Higher conentrations of CO2 mean higher average temperatures in this centry, than the entire time human beings have lived on Earth. That could lead to flooding of the entire east coast. Dave, I guess you just can't keep a good idea down. Now some scientist are leaning back to global cooling again. I think your right about following the money, but also see who all these new regulations will empower.

Funny for a skeptic to say "follow the money."  If you applied that same principle to the global warming skeptics, you lead back to the oil companies. That isn't always the case because not all anti-climate change scientists are on big oil payroll but that industry does throw millions and millions of dollars at it. 

Whenever you get a conspiracy theory argument thrown into a scientific debate, a red flag should be raised. 

Next year it will be something new and soon there will be a new solution, maybe self mutilation to assuage our guilt for living would be a solution, it was tried by during the black plague.

God gave us brains, hands, etc. to work together and change what is happening to our Earth.  Its true about Global Warming... and we have no one to blame but ourselves.  Change CAN take place... God doesn't want us to "fry."  President-Elect Obama will make a difference, but he can't do it alone.  We all need to help out and take responsibility for our own actions.  It's a fact that plants and forests produce oxygen for us to breath, and when we keep cutting down or plowing over these precious living things, we kill us.  Plants soak up carbon dioxide, which is building up in the air.  This is one of a few problems we face with global warming and the destruction of our also precious home - Earth.  AGNSTHEFLOW SPEAKER... you speak of death, but enter in a quote from the Bible about life... you don't make sense.  What I'm sure the quote says is that we need to work to find a way to make "life" happen.   So as Matthew 7:14 says, try to find that path to life.  Don't be lazy and hide behind your misunderstood Bible... get out there and make a difference.

You skeptics have me in stitches.  Just about every other skeptic commenting on here about global warming does at least one of the following:

1) Uses one anecdotal piece of evidence to make sweeping generalizations about climate change.  "Well, my papa's papa said that them ice caps are bigger then they ever is before."  Even the "smart" ones who use complex charts and graphs are guilty of this.  Sorry but you can’t use data at one point or even a dozen points to extrapolate the behavior of a complex system driven by many variables. 

2) Attributes the Climate Change movement to some kind of liberal conspiracy to take away our freedoms and tax us to redistribute our wealth.  Please, it seems every issue that isn't convenient to a right wing ideology is some kind of "Socialist conspiracy." 

3) Provides a false dichotomy of our options available regarding climate change. "We can either go live in caves and hunt food with clubs or we can do nothing about climate change."  There are ALWAYS more options than just two.

4) Quotes articles and information that is old and irrelevant.  "This article in the Lafayette County Times from 1993 said that most scientists don’t' believe in global warming."

5) Confuses the man with the message.  It doesn't matter if Al Gore uses 1 KW a year of energy or 100 TW a second, that has nothing to do with the underlying argument about global warming.  Sure, it affects your opinion of Mr. Gore but he certainly didn't invent the concept and he is definitely not the king of it. 

6) Claims there is a vast conspiracy by government and mass media to censor global warming skeptics.  The fact is that Bush has had the Whitehouse for the past 8 years and GOPs had the house/senate for 6 out of the 8 past years.  This has hardly been a political climate harsh to Global Warming Skepticism.  We have a president who refuses to sign Kyoto and here are people claiming that the skeptics are being censored by some sort of Socialist conspiracy.

I agree with you, I wish the warming would start, and why fix it, let it warm up hell it gets cold up here.  As far as hugging a tree we just cut down 25 trees this year and we have it stacked to burn.  I hug each log as I put it in the fire.

tbpg - climate change is a cyclic phenomenon that has become more extreme.  Global warming is a trending phenomenon that may not self correct without man's intervention.  The 15 degree weather you refer to in November is part of both the cycle and the trend.  You can fix this now by moving to the coast somewhere before they disappear.  Likewise, the trees to hug may not be around.  Sorry if that sounds like doom and gloom, but if that's the only way we can stop this negative trend, then I will certainly support President Elect Barack Hussein Obama's initiative. 

But that's the point - nature has not been respected.  It should have been!  Man, in all his creative ingenuity pursuing greed and power, has upset the normal cyclical nature of ecological change.  So using that ingenuity, man can gradually begin to restore the balance of the world's environment.

More than that, don't build in a fire-prone area!  The Santa Ana winds have been blowing for centuries.  Some quack built way up high in the mountains because the view was nice, giving normally low-intensity fires something else to burn.  Forest fires are a part of the ecological cycle.  For example, the Southern Longleaf Pine can't propagate properly without them.  The link between forest fires and global warming is more imagined than real.  When natural fires are suppressed, as Del points out, you build up excess fuel, so that when the fires do come, they rage larger than they normally would.

We have a real thinker onboard.  Yes, Chris, you are on target.  Indeed, all of California's ecosystems evolved with fire.  Without fire, a natural disturbance that contributes to soil renewal [minerals from the fires enrich the soil], Ca's ecosystems would not have sequoia trees, wild lilacs and a long list of plant succession, which stabilizes ecosystems and ecological functions.

However, in the last few years, fires in SoCal have evolved to be firestorms as opposed to traditional fires, which were slow burning and burned in mosaics.  Today, CA is experiencing faster moving and hotter fires which are firestorms.  When the soil is disturbed for fire prevention, which includes deforestation of native chaparral, something will grow in the vacated soil.  Opportunistic weeds, synonymous with straw-like weeds, quickly take over in the soil.  These weeds are highly inflammable as they turn to dead straw, just in time for fire season.  Conversely, the chaparral does not die in time for fire season as these native species are perennials and remain alive.  And, the less dense, less diverse weeds also produce a hotter immediate climate and a drier climate, which also causes droughts. 

California native plants have adapted to fires.  And, the fire prevention folks do believe the new un-traditional firestorms are being fanned because of global warming.  Though our rainy season has begun in SoCal, we are experiencing temperatures in the high 80's.  And, we should be experiencing cooler temps. and some rain.  Also, many attribute all these droughts to global warming as well.  Remember, the key word is -- climate change.  While some areas of the planet will heat up, others will get colder.  Again, ecosystems regulate the climate as one of their ecological services.   

They are only concerned about themselves and their tiny lives and not about other peole, and surely not about the world.

oh, so global warming is Bush's fault??? you people freaking amaze me. Nothing is 'wrong' with cleaning up the planet, but you cannot use a fallacy and some hollywood idiot's documentary as a base for regulatory policy.

Global warming is but one concern.  Many scientists are deeply concerned that Earth's biogeochemistry is scrambling, which will not only impact the climate but the nitrogen and carbon cycles.

All massive, natural waves of extinction on Earth occurred because of climate change, and always, in every one, the predominant specie fell extinct, obliterated.  In this case, it will be homo sapiens.  The economy and civilization will collapse without the life-gifting services afforded by ecosystems and biodiversity.  Every aspect of life and civilization are brought to mankind because of ecosystems and their biodiversity.

Isn't that cool!! I live along the Mississippi river bluffs in Iowa, and where part of my mountain washed away in a landslide (2003 floods) a huge strata of pure white Pensacola beach sand was revealed, along with fossils.........amazing!

Whatever transpired, whether it was a polar shift, or tectonic plate activity.....it's mind boggling everytime I look out the window.

Emission control is important......does anyone remember hearing about the very real town in Pennsylvania that was in a valley where there were steel mills, and the a stalled low weather system trapped them in a toxic" bubble"?  We really should keep working for clean air.....

Regardless of if you believe in global warming or not, it is wise to invest in energy efficiency, light bulbs, and such, as well as suppliment your power sourse if you can afford to.....our utility bills are getting higher,( reflecting the economy)......to me that's incentive to try to be more self sufficient...and if it helps the environment....where is that a bad thing?
